Simple
This review is from: NETGEAR Roku XD Player NTV250 (Electronics)
My ultimate goal is to rid myself of subscription cable television! My cable provider does not offer a la carte pricing, therefore I must subscribe to literally 100's of channels to get the roughly four HD channels I want (at almost $100 a month). So I decided to give this a try and see if it fits my needs, and so far, so good.

On my connection(s):
1. Via Ethernet to home router.
2. Via HDMI to 1080p LCD.

Setup took less than ten minutes to complete, including hardware registration with ROKU and Amazon Video on Demand. I was pleasantly surprised how fast the player found my account at Amazon and all of my prior video purchases were waiting to be viewed on the player. The remote is simple with only twelve buttons.

On viewing content, the player buffered very quickly and began playing almost immediately. There is quite a bit of free content that can be viewed as well, and was easy to get via the on-screen guide, etc. Will end this review with... I've only had it for a few days, so my opinion could change, and if it does, I will update this review.

Update 12/15/2010

Many reviewers have experienced issues connecting wirelessly, so I decided to try it for myself!

My wireless connection and settings:
Router: Netgear Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit model WNDR3700
Broadcast SSID: Enabled
Security: WPA2-PSK[AES] (8-63 characters or 64 hex digits)
Video Network: Enabled

I disconnected my Ethernet connection, and selected settings, then wireless. The player displayed every wireless connection it could find (all my neighbors were listed). I found my SSID, entered my credentials and within 30 seconds I was connected and scanning my Amazon account.
With the above said, I did not encounter the same issues as other reviewers trying to connect wirelessly. I understand their frustration and that is what prompted me to try wireless for myself, and unfortunately, I did not have any problems. I feel for my fellow consumers and hope they have found a product that suits their needs, however, this works for me and I am extremely pleased. Now, as for wireless, I am going back to Ethernet, it is faster! I am going to purchase another unit for the living room.

I hope this helps, best regards!

good for Netflix

This review is from: NETGEAR Roku XD Player NTV250 (Electronics)
I purchased this Netgear branded Roku mainly as my local BestBuy had it for similar price as here, but also I know that the distance I have to connect over is long and I use a Netgear N router, understanding that there were some negative reviews of the device here. Signal has to go thru several walls- 2 outside walls and one inside wall and prolly 50-60 feet distance as the crow flies. Using wpa encryption I had no problem whatsoever connecting with the netgear router. Setup for the various channels mostly painless but still requires use of a PC logged into my various content sites to enter a code to enable the device to recieve streaming content, similar to how you might configure your wii to get netflix content. Noticing that the placement of the device is pretty important for my signal strength as I am not close to router and putting it in the cabinet with the tv and close to floor significantly weakens connectivity, I have it on top of a small end-table near tv and on netflix most of the time will get four dots for quality. With my DSL connection I am not able to get HD well but the picture quality does seem to be pretty close to that of a dvd. Some disappointment that cannot get free Hulu(that I know of yet) but Hulu+ is there. Mostly easy to use and the device seems to be well ventilated-so far does not seem to be getting too hot. Otherwise seems to be very similar to the midlevel Roku branded device. For the kind of stuff I would look at with netflix streaming the video quality would be "good enough" especially considering the low price of this device. device is really tiny, much smaller than I expected.
does not appear to have an on/off switch and apparently just times out and powers down and is reactivated by just pressing any button on the remote/changing tv input.

Lousy Service from Netgear
This review is from: NETGEAR Roku XD Player NTV250 (Electronics)
I bought two of these Netgear Roku's from Radio Shack & installed both of them (easy installation) & I had a Netflix account so I started watching instant movies & it was great but one day I was watching one of my Roku's & we had a power blip (without power for 8 or 10 seconds)& when the power came back on my Netgear Roku would no longer work, I called Roku & they tried to help me get it fixed..all it needed was a new code number & it would not get a new code, so I was turned over to Netgear & the only way I could get a new code number was to pay $69.95 for 6 months extended warranty & they also offered me 30 minutes of help for $40.00, I had these Roku's for about 6 months & Netgear warranty was good for 90 days, I refused to pay for a new code, I don't consider it to be fair to me..I do consider it to be a scam by Netgear...

$90.00 is way cheaper than buying an internet TV. Works great to stream Netflix and Hulu Plus in my bedroom.
